(11,556 posts)the more official-looking sources seem to suggest that there are theoretical reasons for supposing that ivermectin might be helpful (as well as at least some anecdotal support), especially in combination with other treatments; but there haven't been any proper clinical studies to actually prove or disprove its effectiveness.
A problem in the US is that we leave it to pharmaceutical cos. to do much of the research, and if there's no money in it, they don't do it. Ivermectin's cheap and probably been around too long to be patentable.
But ivermectin's been used for a long time for other purposes, and it generally does no harm, so long as you don't overdose.
I don't see how it can hurt to try it, so long as it's not used as a substitute for better-studied treatments.
