driven by - or at least vastly multiplied by - the inability of the human race to foresee and prevent over-population.

Oh wait, it was foreseen! Just that those who foresaw the general issue, got some details wrong and were written off.

Meanwhile we have a presidential candidate who wants MORE BABIES!!1! (at least if they're white); no matter if the woman might die in the process.

Meanwhile we see newspaper stories about a "demographic crisis" because of people not having enough(!) babies. Rather than about sensible ways to steer economies to successfully manage a declining population. (To be fair, I have seen an article or two on the latter topic. But I believe a survey would show the ratio at least 10:1 favoring the former theme. Sigh.)
