Later in the evening Lincoln stepped over to Seward's house, spoke his regrets to Seward, who remarked that it would be a relief to be free from official cares "Ah, yes, Governor," said Lincoln, "that will do very well for you, but I am like the starling in Sterne's story. 'I can't get out.'"
