Nixon deserves credit for seeing the good in them - but as you pointed out, he made a lot of domestic policy mistakes as well.

Deregulating the price of gold - which immediately jumped from the $35 post-War price, to the hundreds - was the other one. That's the real reason oil skyrocketed in '73/'74: oil exporting dictators love gold, and judge oil prices in terms of "how much gold can this get me?"
