Replace CMOS battery [View all]

When the lithium battery is replaced, it resets the BIOS? That's a potential nightmare. Is there a way to maintain power while replacing the battery? Such as a battery jumper while the old one is popped out and replaced? I'm sure you can't just leave the system running, it would be susceptible to surges and static.

Asking because this HP has been a bear. I replaced the mobo early on after a BIOS upgrade. I think they used 2 BIOS for the mobo which were differentiated by CPU level. I upgraded to the higher BIOS and it locked everything. Probably tossed a perfectly good mobo that would have accepted the higher speed CPU. I surely do not want to install BIOS updates again, but I need to replace the battery very soon.
