2. In the old days we used to use a pencil eraser or cramolin red (now DeOxit)

...depending on the situation.

I'd be afraid to use anything abrasive on anything now, the plating is too thin.

But I wonder if there was dust or debris that was causing the card or contacts to bind & the paste helped alleviate it?
Or maybe the grease helped clean the contacts?
