I mainly use Firefox, kept manually updated, and a pile of obscure Add-ons to customise Tab focus, closing & opening positions and other personal irritants.

There used to be a great FF add-on called TabMixPlus that did all this and more but it stopped development and they have realeased a couple of limited add-ons which are helpful but not perfect.

You can search FF add-ons for 'Tab' and put together your own personal set of tweaks.

Edit to add: I think the term you describe is called 'Session Manager'.
