1. Becket's story marks the beginning period of my theatre career.

In the Mid Seventies my theatre company pulled the bravura stunt of staging Murder In The Cathedral and Becket at the same time. The latter was performed in our theater, and Elliot's play was done in churches all over Central Illinois. All the parts in the plays were swapped around, though I had the pleasure of killing the troublesome priest in both. One of my favorite memories, in the role of The First Knight, was addressing the audience in a Black Southern Baptist church at the end, explaining our motivations. I looked out over the congregation of smiling Black faces and began: "We are all Englishmen, here, and believe in fair play." This got me the best laugh of my life without even trying.
