Be afraid. Be very afraid.

"SNIP.......

That’s the message Le Journal de Montréal, Quebec’s popular tabloid, is trying to convey. Two weeks ago, it refuelled ongoing discussion over immigration in Quebec by splashing on its Saturday cover the image of a fleur-de-lis trapped.

“LE QUÉBÉC PRIS AU PIÈGE” screamed the headline, “Quebec trapped, in a Canada that wants 100 million habitants.” There was an eight-page spread about “Ottawa’s grand plan,” declaring “French forced to decline,” and “(Quebec’s) political influence condemned.”

The paper’s top columnists weighed in, with headlines such as: “Justin Trudeau is more cunning than we believed,” “They want to assimilate us,” “All this without any debate,” and “Two catastrophic scenarios.”

The sensationalist coverage — coming seemingly out of nowhere — got Quebecers talking, from university presidents to the folks at Tim Hortons.
