An executive order extends New York's stay-at-home order for any regions still showing signs of coronavirus spread, state records show.
NEW YORK CITY New York's coronavirus stay-at-home order has been extended until June 6 through an executive order Gov. Andrew Cuomo approved Friday, state records show.
Only regions that meet specific COVID-19 criteria laid out Monday can begin to reopen nonessential businesses and ease back social distancing measures on May 15, the order states.
"Regions that hit our benchmarks will be able to start to reopen," Senior Advisor Rich Azzopardi told Patch. "Where does that leave those who don't? They will still be on PAUSE."
As of Saturday, none of the 10 New York State regions had hit the necessary benchmarks, Azzopardi told the Times Union.
The benchmarks are as follows:
Regions must have at least 14 days of decline in total net hospitalizations and deaths on a 3-day rolling average.
Every region must have the health care capacity to handle a potential surge in cases, with at least 30 percent total hospital and ICU beds available.
Each region must be able to conduct 30 diagnostic tests for every 1,000 residents per month.
Regions must have 30 contact tracers available for every 100,000 residents.
The state's stay at home order was set to expire May 15, but Cuomo made it clear reopening would only occur in areas less seriously affected by the virus, with hard hit places like New York City and Long Island continuing with the shut down.
"It's not going to happen statewide," the governor said. "Rather than wait for the whole state to be ready, we will reopen on a regional basis."
