When I was nineteen and in college I worked the 3:00 - 11:00 shift as a hotel desk clerk in a rather high-crime area of Memphis. The cops of the West Precinct were always stopping by to visit (and flirt) and I loved having those cars out front. We gave them free food in the restaurant. Even those nights when they were too busy to stop, they'd still drive by out front very slowly and shine their light my way until I gave then a thumbs up. I knew all of their names and all about their families. For the most part they were great guys.
