State wants insurers to offer prepper discounts [View all]

This doesn’t rise to the level of prepperdom, where people are preparing for apocalyptic events ranging from a world economic collapse to chemical attacks or zombie takeovers, but the state Department of Financial Services is trying to get home insurers to offer outlines for disaster preparedness courses.

They are also trying to get carriers to offer discounts for people who take the course. It sounds like the auto insurance discounts available for those taking safe driving courses.

The courses, according to guidelines could help remind homeowners to keep detailed records about what is in their homes and how to avoid scammers in a post-flood or other disaster scenario.

Issuing the call for such courses, which could lead to discounts on insurance rates, of course is coming after a record snowfall that will doubtlessly lead to some collapsed or badly leaking roofs, as well as flooding if it warms up too quickly.
