I've seen fraternities active in community service projects where I went to college. I've also had friends that suffered various maladies such as brain tumors, paralysis, cancer, and other accidents. The support of their brothers/sisters in their recovery or to provide comfort to them and their families is invaluable.

I was an independent throughout college, but I was welcomed into one frat house during my time in college and still have a number of friends there today.
