WASHINGTON — The relentless stream of controversies from President Donald Trump’s White House is eroding the trust and confidence of the American people, says former Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.

He said Trump just doesn’t understand governing.

“This is a man who needs to listen and learn,” Hagel told The World-Herald. “And, unfortunately, he’s doing just the opposite. And it’s not good for him. It’s not good for the country. I hope he will take a different tack soon, before it’s too late, before he loses the credibility and the confidence to govern.”

Hagel spoke to The World-Herald this week ahead of the unveiling today of his portrait at the Pentagon.
