Missouri Republicans Introduce Bills to Charge Women Who Receive Abortions With Murder [View all]

Republicans want to imprison women over their healthcare decisions

Troy Matthews1 hour ago

Republicans in both the Missouri State House and Senate have introduced bills for the legislative session that begins in January that would charge women who receive abortions with murder.

Missouri has a total ban on abortion on all stages of pregnancy with limited exceptions. The new bills maintain those bans and add the ability for prosecutors to charge the women receiving abortions with homicide, with exceptions if the woman terminates a pregnancy after being coerced or threatened, or if a physician provides an abortion to save the life of the woman.

As we have seen with the Kate Cox case in Texas who was denied an abortion after being in the emergency room four times for pregnancy complication symptoms, saving the life of the woman is an extremely vague exception that has no basis in medical science. It only serves to create doubt and fear in the minds of physicians who don't know when the procedures would be legally permissible and have to put their careers and livelihoods at risk to perform them.
