Give a portion of Minnesota to Canada? Petition seeks to hand over Northwest Angle [View all]

WASHINGTON — A petition has been started to get the U.S. government to give Minnesota’s Northwest Angle to Canada.

Commonly known as the Angle, the Northwest Angle is home to about 120 people and juts out of northern Minnesota but is surrounded by Lake of the Woods and Canadian territory. It is the only place in the United States outside Alaska that is north of the 49th parallel.

It is a result of a surveying error made in 1755.

“Negotiators of the initial Canada-U.S. border misunderstood the geography of the area,” the petition says. “Make America great by correcting this critical survey error.”
