I do "champion my own health care". I also see a M.D. for expert advice and I'm thankful the one I see:
a) listens to me and answers any questions I have
b) advises me about any "routine maintenance" (including vaccines) or other tests/procedures I need
c) tries to impress on me why something I may be stalling on (not vaccines in my case) really needs to be done.

A physician who does not give the patient all the information they need is incompetent.
