California and a number of other Blue states receive less money from the federal government than they give. Most, if not all Red states, depend upon the federal government to support their state budgets which is why they can claim to have lower state taxes. If they secede, then they would have to raise their taxes to make up for what the federal government provide. IOWs, those states like being welfare queens.
