1. I don't have to worry about Javelinas, but coyotes, yes and the occasional bigger predator

So, my advice is three things: a good strobe light flashlight to blind them, pepper spray, and a whistle. Sure you could carry a bat, but I want to deter, not fight. And loud noise does scare off a lot of animals, including off-leash dogs and the occasional group of coyotes encountered in the wee morning.

The bat might be necessary against the Javelina, though, I suppose. I'd prefer my heavy-duty bear-spray if it came to that.
