I have a niece who translates to ASL, and this remark bothered me.
Without seeing some video, I can't give a fair opinion, but my initial thought is that ASL is much more than Morse Code or semaphore for your hands. It requires exaggerated expression to evoke meaning without audible signals.
Think silent films.
