Music Appreciation

...there was a band that came to our student union.
Fairly hard rock for 70s, but the lead singer was the guy from Spiral Staircase. Don't remember his first name but his last name was Upton.
After Staircase disbanded, he decided to tour for a while. He was already getting tired of it and planned to go back to LA studios.
Even though they were pretty hard rock, they did a version of his big hit. As it was a hit just 4 or 5 years before, the audience all knew it & went nuts over it.
He had a REALLY good voice. He was even more impressive live than on this recording.
