I like decorative stitch markers... lobster claw hooks with little charms dangling from them. So much more fun than a safety pin There are some on etsy.com

A book of amigurumi patterns, if you think she'd like making little stuffed animals for grandkids.

Personally, I'd prefer a gift certificate to a yarn store rather than a skein of luxury yarn which may not be enough for what I'd want to do with it, or a color I don't like, or (fill in the blank).
