My dad was a lifer in the Marine Corps and we were always getting transferred to the opposite coast, almost on a yearly basis. Imagine 4 kids in the back of a Pontiac station wagon pulling a camper trailer, before the insterstate freeway system, with all those hours to kill without killing each other. Battle of New Orleans was one of our favorite songs to sing, along with King of the Road, Battle Hymn of the Republic and all the other military branches anthems, 99 Bottles of Beer, and some other drinking songs that our dad taught us, much to our mom’s chagrin, I’m sure.
