14. I grew up in the 80s with that same environment -

Yesterday

I asked for a phone in my room when I was a teenager. We lived in a big old house in a rural area and my dad said "well, I don't care, but there's no line up there. So, you're going have to find out how much that costs and have them put it in". lol

My mom helped me make the calls and open a checking account so it would be easy to pay my bill! Which was covered by bussing tables and babysitting.
