Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church and Catholics were persecuted. He died and was replaced by Queen Anne, a Catholic. Protestants were then persecuted. She died and was replaced by Queen Elizabeth, a Protestant, and Catholics were persecuted.

As they lived closer to that history, it was easier for them to understand why governments should not be allowed to dictate religion.
