This is what a lot of people can't understand. Saying something is "marriage-like" before it existed is rather disingenuous because marriage is a specific concept governing property, inheritance, and paternity. There is nothing "godly" or a "commitment" or sacred about it. It has been around only about 5,000 years. The human race existed just fine without it long before it came about.

It has always been the foundation of patriarchy, and that is why the religious right nutjobs like the Heritage Foundation and the Christian "reconstructionists" (misnamed nationalists) want to prop it up so much. They know what it is and what it entails, which is the subjugation of women.
