Tens of thousands of immigrants who once legally worked in the United States will soon no longer able to do so, based on the latest policy changes from the Department of Homeland Security. This comes after the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump administration has authority to cancel the Temporary Protected Status program for people from countries like Haiti and Syria.

On Friday the Department of Homeland Security said it would extend work authorization for all 7 countries which lost Temporary Protected Status designation, for an additional one or two weeks. Each country was extended to a new date:

  • Ethiopia: Extended to July 17, 2026
  • Somalia: Extended to July 17, 2026
  • Haiti: Extended to July 24, 2026
  • Burma: Extended to July 17, 2026
  • Syria: Extended to July 17, 2026
  • Yemen: Extended to July 17, 2026
  • South Sudan: Extended to July 17, 2026

  • Temporary Protected Status allowed people who were fleeing violence in their home countries to legally live and work in the U.S.
