It doesn't really make Wallace look a whole lot better -- he went full racist because he was losing votes to other racists. He turned favorably towards Blacks when he realized he needed their votes in the modern era -- more of an unprincipled pol who could read the political weathervanes than an "honest" racist.

Trmp and Miller are bigots to the bone. The only wind they sense blows straight from Hell.
