Approximately two-thirds (about 66%) of the 620,000 to 750,000 total deaths in the American Civil War were caused by disease rather than battle wounds. For every three soldiers killed in combat, five more died from sickness, with diarrhea and dysentery being the top killers, followed by typhoid, measles, and malaria.
