Bannon challenged his contempt conviction. The Trump administration agreed his conviction should be vacated. The only amicus brief, from the state of Iowa, agreed. No one presented the Court with any counter-arguments.

So the Court had essentially no choice but to vacate and remand.

Folks can blame Roberts, but its all but certain that the entire court agreed with this result given the circumstances.
