A few years after Romanian strongman Nicolae Ceausescu implemented his abortion ban, the birth rate (which had skyrocketed in 1967 and 1968) collapsed. It turned out that Romanian couples had learned to enjoy forms of intimacy that posed no pregnancy risk.
