(Bloomberg) -- NATO plans to push Europes debate over security beyond spending increases at its July summit in Turkey to focus on how member states will target investments into technologies that define modern warfare, according to alliance officials.
As the North Atlantic Treaty Organization prepares for a leaders meeting in Ankara, a main focus will be on more efficient investments into areas such as drone technology and systems enabled by artificial intelligence rather than primarily conventional defense hardware, according to officials familiar with the discussions who spoke on condition of anonymity.
To that end, the military alliance will invite defense companies to hold a forum on the sidelines of the July 7-8 meeting in the Turkish capital, a NATO official said. Renewed urgency on security was reinforced with the US-Israeli bombing campaign against Iran. NATO shot down a ballistic missile fired from the Islamic republic Wednesday that was bound for Turkish airspace.
The thrust of the summit will be to accelerate a transition to Europe as the main guarantor of its security, an agenda thats been aggressively pushed by US President Donald Trumps administration. European allies will aim to showcase the progress they've made toward the goal of spending 5% of GDP on defense, with Washington demanding the continent shoulder more of the burden of collective defense.
