7. So sick of headline writing in 2026. Is the story that it "stoked backlash"??

The verb in this sentence is “stoked”. The subject is “Prediction markets”. OOOO, doesn’t that stir the imagination!!!
No. The story is …
…war profiteers got a jump start with inside information
…50 ways to thieve your governed
...insiders enriched by war already
…Somebody made money by bombing Iran
…does Don Jr have bone spurs yet?

Ok, I am a terrible headline writer. But today’s headlines so often pretend that the story is the “reaction of the crowd” instead of the event or the fact. Which relegates everything to spin, emotion, he said/she said, or political camps.

The same approach in the 1960s would have given us:
Man Walks on Moon
….replace with… Moon walk pictures stoke awe and doubt
Assassin Kills Kennedy - Lyndon Johnson Sworn In
….replace with… Assassination brings shock; conspiracy theories multiply
Nixon Resigns / Ford Will Take Office Today
….replace with… Deep state replaces President, prompting concern over Checkers
Beatle John Lennon Slain / Shot Down Outside New York Apartment
….replace with… Peaceniks in shock over Lennon’s death
Martin King Shot to Death / Gunned Down in Memphis
….replace with… Thank God almighty says Bull Connor
