I’ve read the history of this distillery, and the whiskey was actually started by two men, one black, and one white, and their families workrd together for generations and still do. The author did extensive research and interviews and learned that unlike most places of employment back in the south, JD employees all received equal pay and benefits regardless of race and were considered family. It’s quite an interesting book: Love and Whiskey by Fawn Weaver.
