Rudy Giuliani To Testify at Manhattan Trial As Tax Records Unsealed [View all]

A trial begins on Thursday, January 16 to decide whether former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani will be allowed to keep his $3.5 million Florida condominium. Three days ago, the trial judge ordered that Giuliani's tax records be unsealed. Newsweek sought email comment from Giuliani's spokesman on Thursday.

Why It Matters

Giuliani was sued for $148 million by Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, a Georgia mother and daughter he wrongly accused of rigging the 2020 presidential election for Joe Biden. The pair had been working at an Atlanta ballot-counting center during the election and Giuliani was Trump's campaign attorney. A New York judge has ordered Giuliani to transfer his New York apartment to Freeman and Moss, and the former mayor is now fighting to save his Florida home from transfer.

What To Know

The New York trial to decide whether Giuliani gets to keep his Florida apartment, and three World Series rings gifted to him by the Yankees baseball team, is set to begin on Thursday. The former mayor will be the first witness in the case, which is being held without a jury. Giuliani has been frequently disruptive at previous court hearings in the case, and Judge Lewis Liman has admonished him several times. His testimony is likely to be combative as he fights to save his remaining assets.

Giuliani's case has been made more difficult by his refusal to hand over some of his assets, including the ownership paperwork for his 1980 Mercedes. As punishment, Liman found him in contempt of court and has limited the evidence Giuliani can introduce to prove that the Florida condo is his primary residence.
