2. If someone were to get stuck in another country beyond the expiration

they wouldn't be able to get back. The six months is a buffer to make sure people get out of the visiting country.

For example, Canadians can visit Korea for up to 90 days (lucky bastards) without a visa. So the passport would have to have a validity of at least 9 months left if someone were planning on staying the full 90 days.
