running for and winning the position of mayor of the town where he lived. I didn't agree with much of his politics, and his voice was like fingernails on a chalk board, but he didn't try to start at the top.

Given that it's South Carolina, I'd expect someone like Nancy Mace to be named to fill the vacancy. Do they have to do the Republican primary for Senate all over again?
