Some would argue Democrats don't even have a true base like Republicans do. Other people would say the base of the Dem party is black women, who are our most consistent voters.

Democrats have a vibrant progressive faction that is resisting MAGA. I see it. Not sure why you don't.

"Where is all this overt, progressive backlash we need"
-- it's there! Huge numbers of progressives are running and winning primaries.

"rather than the villainizing we see from within the party portraying progressives as too extreme, far-left and untenable?"
-- as I pointed out above, this "villainizing" is only from a small fraction of the Dem party whose voices are greatly amplified by the media, because the media likes centrists and doesn't like progressives.
