Trump acts as the quintessential strongmen do in third world countries. That appeals to a segment of the population, to the point they discount the danger to themselves. Trump's ride to the White House has been driven by nativism, which has an ugly but potent history in America's populist movements. Nativism works as a political engager, typically with exaggerated portrayals of the dangers posed by migrants and immigrants. Thinking one belongs to the preferred in-group when one doesn't goes hand in hand with this.
