(5,303 posts)you: "women who get drunk deserve to get raped?"
ME and Graham Platner: NO, but if you get so drunk in public that you are incapacitated,
it does increase the chances that such an attack could happen, when you can't defend yourself against it--
and that part of it is on YOU, if you rendered yourself incapable of self-defense in public--
but in no way excuses the male who raped you!
"Maine U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner made disturbing comments about sexual assault victims in Reddit posts that were deleted shortly before he launched his campaign saying assault victims should just take some responsibility for themselves to avoid attacks and act like an adult for fcks sake. He said people should avoid alcohol so they dont end up in a compromising situation and downplayed the challenges servicemembers face in reporting sexual assault. Seems like pretty common-sense advice to EVERY woman ANYWHERE--- DON'T get so drunk in public that you make yourself vulnerable to sexual assault!--- That IN NO WAY is a DEFENSE of RAPISTS who would take advantage of the situation, nor did he offer anything that could reasonably be judged as such!--- it was advice to women to be the first to take care of themselves, because male predators are OUT THERE--- and as someone who has admitted problems with alcohol, he knew what he was talking about!
I have seen what he was talking about, personally--- I was a taxi driver in East Lansing, Michigan, serving a lot of M.S.U. students before and after bar closings on Friday and Saturday nights... One night I was at a corner waiting for a traffic-light change, and some people shoved a very drunk girl into my back-seat, without my permission, and she could barely give me a destination... By the time I drove there, only a very few blocks away, she was completely passed out and I could not wake her up to exit my taxi at her residence... She was very young, attractive and barely dressed in some tiny halter top--- and the Devil told me "you could do anything with her that you want, and then toss her out onto her front lawn"...
Well, luckily for her I was not that guy, and I was very concerned about alcohol poisoning being a threat to her very life, so I drove her back to a point where I knew there would be police, and then got blocked in by police cars and an ambulance---costing me about an hour which I had to pay for, on one of the busiest nights of the week, and I didn't get paid for that ride, either--- before I was finally able to leave, they had succeeded in beginning to revive her, and she was responding to them verbally--- to which I felt relieved.
I hope she learned some kind of lesson from that night, and I am still glad that my taxi was the one she was shoved into,
even though it cost me money...... because I presume she came to no physical harm that night,
other than what was self-inflicted, but I can't presume what might have happened if she had been
shoved into the back-seat of any other taxi driver's car....
What I got from Platner's comments about female public drunkeness,
was that women need to be the 'first line of defense' for their own sake---
but not that they were 'to blame' if they failed in that,
or that any rapist was in any way 'excused' for taking advantage of the situation....
He probably worded his opinions poorly, possibly because he was drunk himself
at the time he posted them, but I think his advice was totally sound...
