In reply to the discussion: Melania was an Epstein Escort [View all]Betty Boom
(505 posts)I'm not sure how that relates to what I wrote.
I was talking about consensual adult sex work, not the sexual exploitation of children. Those are very different issues. Of course Epstein's abuse of minors was reprehensible. My point was that when evaluating someone's conduct, it's important to focus on the specific behavior at issuesuch as dishonesty, hypocrisy, exploitation, or abuserather than treating "sex worker" itself as a negative label.
What has stood out to me in many of the comments about Melania's past was not discussion of hypocrisy or dishonesty, but the assumption that having done sex work automatically reflects poorly on a person's character or makes them deserving of contempt. That's the perspective I was responding to.
I think there may be some overlap here between different topics that are worth keeping separate. I was making a point about consensual adult sex work, while your response referenced Jeffrey Epstein and child sexual abuse. In my view, those are distinct subjects and should be discussed on their own terms.
If someone exploited children, trafficked people, abused others, or lied about their past, then those actions are entirely appropriate to criticize. But that's a different argument from saying that being a sex worker is, by itself, something shameful.
