Not dissing those who find comfort in their religiosity, but -
- he's been exhibiting that he has recently developed feelings of normal mortality, and he's grabbing onto anything that might keep him in the "special" category of society.
He feels he doesn't have to be afraid of ending up common worm food like everyone else if he can live forever as one of the elect.
Spitballing here, but I'm speculating his recent habit of saying "Praise Allah" is not just sarcasm, but a way to prove if he can angle himself into the heaven with the 72 virgins.
