(3,718 posts)There is the fact that Platner has about 500 red flags that make me question his candidacy.
There is the sentiment that his words today do not reflect his core beliefs which (implicitly) are anti-Democratic coalition.
But we need to realize that if the election were held tomorrow, he'd win resoundingly.
This is either because the electorate isn't what we think it is (which is true), or it is because of a weakness of other candidates (which is also true).
Platner is difficult because there is nothing under the skin. Just rhetoric. I'd have preferred he run for Congress, but he is running for the Senate and he will be our nominee (p < 0.05)
So... why is he the nominee?
Is he so slick that he got 'em Mainers fooled? Did he hoodwink Sen. Warren and Sen. Sanders?
Perhaps the Democratic coalition is more willing to look beyond these red flags if you are a fire breathing campaigner and projects populism and, yes, masculine energy.
Platner has defined the race, and Mills has been passive in it. That is why I think she is losing. And will lose by an embarassing margin.
