Perhaps the area where the tankers were doing their lazy ovals wasn't secure after all. They are awfully big targets. A mid air drone attack? Our military platforms have max speeds well over 300 mph. And they can be hard to spot. Maybe something in the Iranian arsenal no one's seen yet.
