When the Iranians deposed the shah there were various factions jockeying for control and Reagan's henchmen allied with the authoritarian mullahs, agreeing to provide them with military hardware - against US law, effectively ensuring that the authoritarian side would win control in exchange for keeping the US hostages until Reagan won.
I'm not optimistic that this US backed regime change will go any better.
