Pete Hegseth Wants the Keys to the AI Doomsday Machine [View all]
ROBERT REICH
To be sure, AI is capable of changing human life for the better. But if unregulated, it could be a destructive nightmare giving government the power to know everything about us and suppress all dissent, distorting news and media to the point where no one can distinguish between lies and truth, and threatening human beings with bots that could decide were unnecessary obstacles to their taking over the Earth.
Now is the time we should be putting guardrails in place. But two forces are making this difficult, if not impossible.
Anthropic has been one of the most safety-conscious of all AI companies. It was founded as an AI safety research lab in 2021 after its CEO, Dario Amodei, and other co-founders left OpenAI, concerned that OpenAIs ChatGPT wasnt focused enough on safety.
Amodei has argued that AI needs strict guardrails to prevent it from potentially wrecking the world. In 2022, he chose not to release an earlier version of Anthropics AI software Claude, fearing it would start a dangerous technology race. In a podcast interview in 2023, he said there was a 10% to 25% chance that AI could destroy humanity.
Just a year ago I was so sure that the climate chaos (which is still escalating exponentially) was going to be the really horrible thing humanity had to either face together as one and deal with in the next 5 to 10 years or face massive loss of life and basic human civilization in the near future. Not nuclear war or AI fantasy crap from delusional billionaires on drugs who watched a lot of sci fi movies ...
But with the speed of things advancing now it almost seems like a perfect storm of hell is happening.
Be prepared for anything folks. Help your neighbors. Share your resources.
Greed has almost destroyed us. Let's not allow that to happen.
And a big thank you to
highplainsdem who has been posting about this at DU for years.
