the baseline of Republican motivation has been rage against women. Hilary Clinton was the first "modern" first lady. Regardless of how much power and influence they may have had, all other first ladies before her kept very much in the background. Hilary Clinton did not - to them she represented the success of the feminist movement and it enraged them. Layered on top of that was Obama's win - which meant that the uppity women were now being joined by uppity POC. There is a reason why Trump won when he ran against women but not when he ran against a man.
