I don't believe it will ever be traced back to Putin though. Putin made every oligarch a 50% partner. They had to offshore their stolen wealth because they couldn't keep it in Russia without being discovered. So they invested their pilfered cash in western (European and American) properties and stocks, bonds, etc. Whatever profits they've made, Putin takes half.

There's an awesome book about all of this by Bill Browder and it's called "Red Notice." You don't have to buy it from Amazon, because it's probably at your local library. Here's the info:
