We've created the monsters by allowing the system to get so out of whack.

The obscene wealth of the few has distorted societal aims and goals while bolstering the idea that the rich are superior, smarter, entitled to do whatever they want. No restriction, no regulation of anything including private and public behavior. Taxes? Laws? They're for the little people.

The mindset feeds into this whole idea about empathy being dangerous because ordinary people are viewed as objects, vehicles to be used or abused as the case may be for the further attainment of wealth, pleasure, whatever. And yes, only law enforcement and the military are deemed necessary to protect The Castle, money, lifestyle, property.

I suspect the 'entitled' rich must laugh their heads off when they hear defenders repeat trickle down economics. the innovators, meritocracy rewards superior talent, greed is good, yada, yada.

We're living in the Age of Monsters. With excellent lobbyists, lawyers and PR departments.

F Scott Fitzgerald nailed it decades ago:

Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me.
