IL-09: Progressive groups back Abughazaleh in crowded Dem field for Illinois House seat [View all]

Two prominent progressive groups announced Thursday that they’re backing influencer and congressional candidate Kat Abughazaleh in the crowded Democratic primary for a House seat in the Chicago area.

Justice Democrats and Peace, Accountability, Leadership (PAL) PAC, a new pro-Palestine political group, said they’re endorsing Abughazaleh, who is Palestinian American, about a month out from the hotly contested Democratic contest in Illinois’s 9th Congressional District, which extends from Chicago’s Far North Side to the northern suburbs.

“At a time when so many career politicians in the party have to be convinced to condemn genocide, we are proud to support a first-time candidate who has the moral clarity to oppose bottomless budgets for Israel’s ethnic cleansing, abolish [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement] and fight for every person to afford the life they deserve,” Justice Democrats Executive Director Alexandra Rojas said in a statement.

Margaret DeReus, the executive director of PAL PAC, lauded the progressive congressional candidate over her position on Palestinian rights and focus on the district, saying in a statement that she “represents an exciting new wave of bold and progressive democratic candidates in the 2026 midterms.”
